Hi Maman,
This feels like a significant moment as I write my first letter to you. I hope you are at peace in heaven, watching over me. I often think about how you must see everything happening down here.
Life has become incredibly challenging since you were taken from us. Dad, who now calls himself “the King,” chose to reduce my status to that of a servant, all while planning to make that insufferable woman’s son the future king when he eventually passes. In a cruel twist of fate, they burned my part of the castle during the chaos, tragically killing my best friend, Martie. Martie was such an amazing dog, always by my side through thick and thin. They believed I perished in the fire, but against all odds, I managed to escape. In your honor, I decided to carry your last name, Maman, as a symbol of my resilience and connection to you.
For a long time, I wandered the streets, fighting to survive and taking on various jobs in taverns and other establishments. It was a hard life, filled with uncertainty and fear. One day, out of pure frustration and anger, I unleashed a magical spell without even realizing that I had the power within me. Can you believe it? Me, a lowly drow elf, wielding magic! Inspired by your teachings, I decided to pursue my newfound abilities seriously. I enrolled in mage school, immersing myself in the study of diverse magical arts, intricate rituals, and much more. Along the way, I joined both the Mages Guild and the Spy Guild to hone my skills.
Now, I am recognized in my guild as an arcane strategist, infiltrator, and skilled spy. My guildmates have become like family to me, Maman, and I can’t wait to share their stories with you. Kazumi, for instance, is truly remarkable. She not only stands out for her talents but also because I made a pact with her as my celestial partner. Her strength and knowledge have been invaluable to me.
Then there’s Haruki, Kazumi’s husband. He is confident and exceptionally strong, qualities that make him a perfect match for her. Together, they form a remarkable team, always supporting one another.
Maman, let me tell you about Mordekai as well. He is always pestering us to write our names in his peculiar book. I sometimes wonder what he plans to do with all that information, but trust me, it wouldn’t end well for me if I were to poke fun at him. Kazumi would most certainly put me in my place if I dared! Sinja is another unique member of our group; he is a kenku, and I must admit I had never encountered one until I met him. His intelligence is astonishing, but there are moments when he seems to lose himself in dance while whispering. At first, I thought he was merely eccentric, but I’ve come to realize that he is communing with his deity during those episodes.
Lastly, we have Ulf, who recently did something rather bizarre—he ate dirt! I’m not quite sure what motivated that choice, whether it was a strange craving or some odd survival instinct, but it definitely keeps our adventures interesting. Each of my guildmates adds a unique flavor to our escapades, and I truly cherish the bonds we’ve formed. I know you would have adored them, their quirks, and the camaraderie we share if you were here with us.
Let me tell you about the other day we went to the town of Downshade. A celestial mark had appeared scorched onto the wide field it glowed and had radiant energy emitting from it. The symbols did resemble a constellation that none of us recognized at first. We investigated as some of us had unsettling visions, one was of a radiant being shattered into fragments, and another saw a shadow consuming a star, someone heard the words, “The shards must be reunited, or all will fall to ruin.” it was worrisome when the vision was happening as we did not know what, or why they were happening. I know that we even found two humanoid remains charred, it looked like they were vaporized in mid action. They were priests! Maman, who were at the looks of it either trying to destroy or activate the symbol, while one of them held on to a partially burned scroll that had cryptic writing.
Then a rift appeared as 2 wraiths came out and attacked us. We all readied for battle as they attacked it was such a fun and crazy battle, one of the wraiths was destroyed, and another was banished. After our battle with the wraiths, this Corrupted Solar appeared that went by The Herald of Dusk. The Herald spoke saying, “Your meddling is futile. The shards you seek are not salvation—they are splinters of a doomed legacy. The Unmaker’s shadow consumes all, even the brightest stars. It is inevitable. And yet, you come here with hubris, believing you can stand against the tide.” It questioned us in a way we did not know what it was about but Sinja’s quick wit in deceiving it so we could get info helped us a little, but it knew Sinja was lying but it went along with what Sinja was saying. The herald asked for action as evidence of Sinja’s words testing him to see if what he was saying was truth.
Eventually, the herald gets tired and warns Sinja “Foolish mortal. I see through your facade as easily as one sees through smoke. Your attempts at deception amuse me, but they will not spare you.” Mordekai and Kazumi both wonder why it was there (the herald that is Maman). The Herald answered them, “Why am I here? Foolish mortals, your limited minds cannot grasp the weight of this moment. I am the harbinger of the inevitable, the voice of the shadow that will consume the stars. This symbol—this fractured relic—is but a whisper of what is to come.” it went on about, “The shards scattered here are remnants of a broken covenant, forged to bind the Unmaker’s will. But that covenant has failed. Creation is collapsing under the weight of its own hubris, and I am here to see it undone. To prepare the way.” it also said, “Once, I served the light. I upheld the order of existence with unwavering zeal. But I have seen the truth: creation is a flawed, fragile lie. The Unmaker offers release—a return to the purity of nothingness. And so, I have been chosen to unbind the threads of fate.” then it also said, “And now you stand here, defiant, clutching at embers while the fire fades. I am here to extinguish even those.”
Then a battle commenced as the herald wished to rid itself of us. I used spells that were ok but not as efficient as others. The herald did do damage to some of us and most of us did damage to the herald. The battle was a tough one but we came out victorious at the end. Maman from our victory this being appeared its Name was Cassidion and it said to us, “The mark was a warning, and you have answered the call. But the shadow is closer than I feared. You have seen the shards—broken remnants of what once held the Unmaker at bay. Gather them, for only you can rekindle the light.” I wonder what this is about. Where does this leave us and what is going to happen? I’m sure you are wondering the same, or maybe you already know seeing as you’re up there with all the gods. Maybe this will lead us on some great adventure, it may even have to do with saving the world or the universe only the gods know why.
Well, Maman Unitl next time. I hope that I can be of better use, although I doubt I will. Maybe I’m not powerful enough.
Your Loving child,
Enialis De Clermont
Lovely post, well written!
